What's new in 2.0 — Part 5

Part 5 of 2.0. These changes are part of version 2.0, which is installed fresh: it does not open the data of 1.2.1 (see What's new in 2.0). Where this page speaks of installing it over your current version, or of a first start that backs up and updates your data, that is how later updates of 2.0 install.

This version protects your data on this PC with encryption and makes your backups safer and easier to restore anywhere. It also sharpens the reorder suggestions, adds what-if and cost calculators and a cohort report, corrects the return-rate report, and brings a guided Import Wizard and a demo company to try things out. Install it over your current version like any update: the first start backs up your data first. See How to install an update.

Your data is encrypted on this PC

  • Every company's data and the installation's own data are stored encrypted. Someone who copies the data folder, or takes the PC's disk, sees only noise. Windows keeps the keys for the Windows user who uses the app; nothing changes in how you work. The first start of this version encrypts your existing data once, right after the backup before the update (the splash shows "Protecting your data" meanwhile). See Your data is encrypted on this PC.
  • Keep your recovery code. The app makes a recovery code when it first protects your data. Until an Admin has kept it, a bar Keep your recovery code appears after signing in: show the code in Settings › Security, print or save it, and keep it away from this PC. See How to keep your recovery code.
  • A new PC, or a reset Windows profile: copy the whole data folder over, start the app and, when it says your data is protected, click Enter recovery code. Without the code, restore a backup instead. See If the app says your data is protected.
  • Important: without the recovery code, the Windows user who set the app up and a backup, the data cannot be recovered - not by us either. Keep the code and a backup.

Safer, simpler backups

  • A backup password. Set one in Settings › Backup and every new backup opens on any PC with that password alone - no license key of yours, no support needed (the PC you restore on needs the app activated, with a license or a trial key). By default your license key still opens every backup too; an Admin can turn that off, so that only the backup password opens new backups. See How to set a backup password.
  • An off-site copy. The app can copy every backup to a folder outside this PC's data - a OneDrive or Dropbox folder, or a USB drive - as soon as it is made. Last copy says when the newest arrived, and you are told if a copy fails. It needs a backup password first. See How to copy backups off this PC.
  • Backups from another PC or license. A backup made elsewhere shows Restore...: open it with its backup password, or with its license key and a one-time restore code from support. See How to restore a backup.
  • Offline override codes. When a computer that cannot go online for a long time becomes read-only, support can send a code that works without the internet. See Chapter 2.

Better reorder suggestions and new planning tools

  • The lead time you really get. Once a product has 3 or more received purchase orders, Reports › Replenishment plans with the time those orders actually took (and adds safety stock when it varies), not the vendor's promise. The Lead column says actual, promised or default.
  • Seasons. With 13 months of sales or more, the suggestions follow your own seasons (Seasonal × shows the factor).
  • What if… works the suggestions out again with another demand, lead time or safety multiplier, and saves named scenarios. Nothing is ordered.
  • Stock-out and overstock costs (estimates) shows what running out and holding too much would cost, with every assumption listed.
  • Cohorts (a new Reports tab) follows the products that launched in each month: units, revenue or net profit in the months after launch.

See The report tabs.

The return-rate report is corrected

Reports › Returns now counts returns and return fees in the chosen period only (by return date and settlement date). Before, every return ever recorded was set against the period's sales, so a short period could show a much higher return rate than it had. The figures of a chosen period change: they are now lower or equal, and correct; without dates nothing changes. Each product's rate is also shown beside the company's rate and its own previous 12 months, and a rate at least 1.5 times the company's is marked ▲.

Imports and trying things out

  • The Import Wizard (Imports) is one page to start any import: it recognises the file, applies your import template, previews and imports Walmart sales, settlement and product files, and sends other files to their own page. See How to use the Import Wizard.
  • A demo company with made-up data lets you try the app without touching your own. It does not count against your license's companies and is deleted with one click. See How to try the app with a demo company.

Connections on the way

  • Amazon, straight from Seller Central. The Amazon Import page will offer From Amazon (API) next to the downloaded file: settlements, orders, reimbursements and returns read exactly as their reports, the same preview, nothing saved until Import and nothing changed at Amazon; plus a comparison of your FBA stock and your listings' ASINs. It shows Coming soon until it has been tested with a real seller account. See How to import Amazon reports.

Updating your data

  • The first start backs up your data first (listed as Before an update), then encrypts it once. The data itself - every figure - stays exactly as it was; only the return-rate report's figures for a chosen period change, as described above. No table or column of your data changes.
  • Going back to 2.3. While your data is not encrypted (Settings › Security says so), version 2.3 opens it, and it can restore the Before an update backup made by this version's first start. The other backups this version makes are in a newer format: 2.3 says "This backup was made by a newer version of the app" and restores nothing. Once your data is encrypted, 2.3 cannot open it: it says Data from a newer version and changes nothing. Ask support before going back.
